Shell is being sued by more than 13,000 people whose lives were affected by oil spills in Nigeria.

Residents representing two communities of more than 65,000 people have filed claims at the High Court in London seeking compensation and what could, if carried out fully, be the world’s largest ever terrestrial oil clean-up.

The communities of Ogale and Bille in the Ogoniland area of the Niger Delta originally brought the case to the UK in 2015, accusing Shell of devastating farmland and fishing waters since drilling began there in the 1950s.

The case was rejected by the High Court and the Court of Appeal before the Supreme Court ruled in 2021 that it could be heard in England.
